ACS Independent Stage

session 3- Zhe Xian

January 26, 2007 · 1 Comment

The theme of darkness prevailed in this week’s ACSIS aggregation. The activity-filled day commenced with the supposed existence of the magical bubble gum and our desperate attempts to fling it off. This activity was followed by another which intended to create awareness, in us, of the space around us.

The Independent Stage, or perhaps it was just I, was certainly amazed by the maze constructed by Mr. Brian Connor. Intricately designed with a certain danger of getting impaled if not approached with caution, its only purpose was to complicate things for an average blindfolded human being. Note: Please, don’t try this at home. Fortunately for the blind rats that were surrounded by darkness, the sense of hearing was not denied. Therefore, the voice of their trustee guided us to the light.

These preparatory activities were succeeded by the anticipated highlight of the day: the play. Challenging was a perfect word to describe the efforts required to construct the play. Members of the club formed groups to act out a transitional scene from Light, to Dark, then Light again. Despite time constraints, the groups were able to produce quality presentations, as expected of ACS students. One of the most memorable play of the day belonged to the group that depicted a toilet scene. It not only fulfilled the primary requirements, but was also successful in rousing laughter from the audience.

Wonderful – Shawn Ang

January 25, 2007 · 4 Comments

Hello everybody! My name is Shawn and I am an abused year 6 member of the ACS(I) Drama club or better known as the Independent Stage. I must say I am extremely thrilled and honoured to be part of this wonderful CCA because its so wonderfully wonderful. So wonderful.

Well I’m here today to share a few thoughts on our wonderful Orientation on the 17th of January 2007. If I could describe Orientation in 1 word, I would describe it as: Wonderful.

Why Wonderful? Well wonderful in many ways because

Firstly: I realized that Mr. Brian John Connor was actually called Brian and not John. Secondly: I realized I was the only guy wearing shorts

And Thirdly: I got to know everyone so much better.

I also got asked(arrowed) by Mr.Quek to update the blog!

Well, the wonderful orientation began rather solemnly. We were introduced to some warm-up exercises which were meant to help us loosen our muscles and to relax. It was very zen and for prolonged periods of time it felt like a strange yoga class, strange because it was my very first drama session so I felt very alien, but it was wonderful nonetheless.

The next part of orientation was a drama workshop led by Mr. Connor. The activities included a mirror-your-friend-and-shift-down-the-conveyor-belt game, where we were suppose to mirror the actions of a partner standing directly opposite; a pointing game, which cannot be explained because we still can’t get it right; At the end of it all, we were split into little groups to act out a little-skit-that-isnt-really-a-skit-cause-you-cant-talk-thing-not-a-mime-too. I forgot what its called, I think its called a tableaux. Each group was given an oxymoronic theme (e.g IB/Cool) and my group, which consisted of Wai Zaw, Michelle, Kia Hua, Martin and myself, was given the topic: Love/Hate.

For me, this was the highlight of the day because it was so interesting and wonderful(yay vocab) to see the different groups present their tableau. I must say that ACS(I) has so many wonderful(yay again) actors/actresses out there because every tableau was executed so well and efficiently(ripped from Mr. Connor).

We had games after the workshop. It was wonderful too. We played 2 games, well 3, but the last one was, not so wonderful. I enjoyed the drop-the-curtain-and-scream-your-friend’s-name game was extremely extremely fun and I must say that Joshua Cao is the king. The last game was rather weird, it was more like a fight, but I shall not comment.

The day ended with a very wonderful buffet dinner where everyone got the chance to mingle around and get to know everyone a bit better. Good food. Good weather. Good ambiance.

So yay! As you can see, I don’t usually blog so my thoughts are rather disjointed. But I would like to thank the entire drama exco and the teachers-in-charge who planned this orientation. Looking forward to our next meeting!
