Chinese Opera Workshop on May 23, 2007 by Pablo “Lex” Lazatin

With the casts for the FoA production finalized, this week’s workshop was intended to enhance our understanding of the movements required for our respective roles in the play. We had a new mentor come in this week and for the first time, it was a “he” rather than the usual females who taught us in the previous sessions. It is interesting to note that all of the instructors we’ve had seem to display the same standardized Chinese opera movements. Whether they are male or female, they all appear to be able to effectively execute the gestures for any character, no matter what the gender. Watching the mentor alternate between the delicate motions of the young lady and the coarse gesticulations of the convict was often comic and always entertaining. It would be really beneficial to our growth as actors if we could pick up on this versatility that the instructors have shown. As for myself, I had a lot of fun seeing the others getting into character. Everyone was beginning to take on their roles and it was especially amusing watching as the different characters played off each other. Earlier in the session, we had gone through the script so during the workshop, we tried to find ways in which we could incorporate the movements we were learning into the play itself. In my case, my role as the convict/worker requires me to be on my hands and knees a lot. Ouch.
I can’t wait to get started with the actual rehearsals.
