Drama Camp Reflections:When I heard that there was going to be a drama camp, I was psyched. It seemed like a fun prospect, and I was correct – it was, indeed, an extremely fun and enriching experience. On the first day of the camp, the highlight was the mafia themed social night, which I felt went well, with Joshua Cao giving a ear-splitting rendition of some song, and Nirvana’s ‘Smells like a Teen Spirit’. After going on an ice cream run at Dover with a some of the year 6s, I came back just in time to enjoy Francis Ford Coppola’s classic – The Godfather. That was, definitely, one of the best movies I’ve seen in awhile, and I thought that it certainly deserved its place on the pedestal of being the greatest movie of all time. It also served well to set the tone for the night games on the second day, which were similarly themed.
The second day was another fun day due to the various workshops we attended. Most notably was the makeup workshop, conducted by the distinguished Madam Haslina. I couldn’t believe that we were actually being schooled on makeup by the same person who worked in the ‘Phantom of the Opera’! She was a really talented makeup artist, and it was a day of discovery for me – I learnt that Hadi had an inner calling for makeup; I looked cool in a goatee; William looks absolutely terrifying in Chinese Opera-esque makeup; and that i can now totally own any girl in the art of makeup application…Goatees and full faced scars anyone? ….Ladies?
Anyway, later that night were the night games, and it was amusing how Audrey and Theodore would subconsciously put on an Italian accent when spoken to by the very in character exco members. Oh, and the Drama teachers were excellent in their adopted roles. The night games were exhilarating, but tiring. Theodore screams louder (and higher) than Audrey, as Hadi and I found out, courtesy of a rubber rat. Also, muchos respect to Mr Connor and Madam Yeow for their discipline during the night games… Madam Yeo had to sit alone in a dark cargo lift, while Mr Connor had to lie alone in the cage. Both are extremely freaky locations. I certainly doubt I would have been able to tolerate it as well as they did. And sorry to Mr Connor for keeping you waiting so long… (Hopefully that won’t affect my IOP grade…)
The final day was the presentation of skits day, and Cielo was amazing in her role of being a Filipino maid…but then again it wasn’t acting, eh Cielo? :p Zhe Xian also shone in his portrayal of an epileptic superhero, although again whether any acting was required on his part is a questionable topic. We were also shown how the ‘great prizes’ we were promised were somewhat of a letdown, although not exactly misrepresentation. The winning group did indeed get their ‘vogue handphones’, which, in my opinion weren’t very vogue at all; and the runner ups received their Zen Stones. If I come in runners up enough times I’ll soon be able to set up my own Zen garden. A rather relaxing prospect – albeit not totally worth it, in my opinion. Anyway all in, it was an extremely fun camp, and I felt that it helped us drama members really bond with each other. The exams are going to be upon us soon, and this was a welcome relief from the tedium that is sure to follow. I appreciate that all those drama members who were struggling with their HL math portfolios bothered to show up for the camp, and it’s really telling about their commitment to the drama club! Now that the camp’s over, it’s time to concentrate on the year ends, and think about where the hell my group’s going to get 59 people with whom to properly execute our SYF script….
